Talking to Carlo Barberi

Anjo Banjo: How did you start all of this, like some people like my self see a drawing and say to them self , I want to do that.

Carlo Barberi: Yes, pretty much like that, ever since when I was a kid, my mother told me that I just took the table and just paint at the
table, so since i was a I’d, I just went to do that.

Anjo Banjo:There is this picture in one of the Deadpool with an arrow through his head, do you know who drew that particular picture? It’s hilarious!

Carlo Barberi: I think Paco Medina was the one to draw that particular issue, I think I drew the next one or something like that.
Well it’s those kind of things, always, when it comes to Deadpool. I have to draw those kinda things always in Deadpool and they are really really fun to do those.

Anjo Banjo: I love Deadpool, what do you think about him breaking the fourth wall?

Carlo Barberi: It’s awesome! You kinda relate to the character when that happens, you know you understand that he sees you so it’s a lot of fun.
I’m really happy working on that in Deadpool.

Anjo Banjo: Which one is your favorite character to draw?

Carlo Barberi: I have a bunch but I really like Deadpool, Superman, Batman, Spider-man, so I think that I have to stop right there. It’s pretty much all I like to draw. (Laughs)

Anjo Banjo: Some artist draw Deadpool differently with some more de formed and other less, how deformed is your Deadpool?

Carlo Barberi: Not that deformed, maybe because I like the character, maybe that’s why mine is not so deformed. I pretty much just draw scars
and little bumps here and there but when you really look when I draw Deadpool without a mask you can see that he was handsome at some point, you know?

Anjo Banjo: Would you say will he ever be able to join the other X-men? You know he is back an forth. He is evil but he does the right thing.

Carlo Barberi: I don’t think he will be able to get the X-men he is to unstable to be an X-man and they have a big flag, you know they are the good guys and
everybody hates them, just imagine about Deadpool doing something stupid there.

Anjo Banjo: Like making million of pancakes for breakfast.

Carlo Barberi: Exactly. (Laughs)

Anjo Banjo: Tell me something about your equipment, how do you start from an idea to a finished product?

Carlo Barberi: Well I just imagine the, well I am gonna talk about pages. I got a script I just read what’s on the page and I imagine what the page is gonna look like and I just go from there I just start drawing. I just go from pencil to do the sketches and then the cells, then go to directly to pencil.

Anjo Banjo: If you look at the old Marvel comics they started with even squares and then came Japanese influence and opened up full pages and like that what inspired you to do the new way of drawing?

Carlo Barberi: When I was a kid I actually my first attempt on braking the page I saw McFarlane, Tod McFarlane. I just went nuts on that kinda thing. I remember John Romita, Jack Kirby, you know all that stuff but I thought that comics went that way and I want to draw comics but when I saw McFarlane I just like, ‘my god you can do that in a comic book page?’  So, that’s pretty much it, it’s my influence and how to brake a page, pretty much started with Tod McFarlane.

I still hope that one day the X-men will accept Deadpool into their ranks, because they need a little bit more “crazy” and less sappy emo boy scout bordedom like Cyclops!

I mean come on.

Everytime  Jean goes missing, he turns into an Emo girls dream! They need Deadpool, at least he doesn’t break down when he “kind of” kills someone.

Only time will tell “and writers” where Deadpool will end up, one thing is for sure, there will be Taco’s involved.
